Methodology
Last updated: 2026-07-29 · Transparent ranking, labeled money, no fake reviews.
Free-first ranking
On each paid-tool page we list free and cheaper alternatives. Sorting is:
- Match score (0–100) — how well the alternative covers the paid product’s common jobs (features, workflows, file types).
- Price — lower monthly cost wins when match scores are close. Free ($0) options rise when they fit.
We deliberately surface open-source and free tiers before expensive “enterprise” options that do not save money. Rankings are editorial comparison content, not a certification or lab benchmark.
Match score
Match score is an editorial estimate of overlap for typical use cases — not a lab score or guarantee. A 90+ free tool can still miss a niche pro feature; always trial with your own files before you cancel a paid subscription.
Savings calculation
Estimated savings compare the paid baseline tool to each alternative:
- Monthly: max(0, baseline monthly − alternative monthly)
- Annual: max(0, baseline annual − alternative annual), using listed annual prices or monthly × 12 when annual is missing
Figures are directional. Vendors change list prices, seat minimums, and promos — confirm on the official site before buying or switching.
Estimated vs verified prices
Each paid baseline shows a price badge:
- Estimated — seed, approximate, illustrative, directory-density, missing check date, or stale (older than ~90 days).
- Verified — public list price reviewed on the check date (still confirm on the vendor site; list prices move).
When present we show Price checked: YYYY-MM-DD next to the badge.
Paid placements ($9 / $29 / $49)
App makers can buy exposure next to “free/cheaper alternative to X” intent via PayPal. Tiers are deliberately low vs big directories:
- $9 Starter — basic listing placement
- $29 Featured — stronger placement
- $49 Spotlight — highest paid inventory tier
Paid placements are advertising, labeled as Starter / Featured / Spotlight. They do not buy a fake match score or erase organic ranking logic on comparison tables. See List your tool.
Owned network listings
Products from our network (or first-party apps we operate) may appear under Listed apps and on the homepage. They use the same placement labels (Spotlight / Featured / Starter) and real product assets where available. They are not presented as independent third-party star ratings.
Editor notes — not fake reviews
Listing pages may include an editor note: short, first-party commentary about fit, pricing posture, or use case. We do not invent multi-user star ratings, fabricated testimonials, or fake review volume. If something reads like a review, treat it as editorial context only.
Independence & affiliates
CheaperThan is independent comparison content. We may earn affiliate commissions on some outbound links. Affiliate relationships do not change the free-first sort rules. Always verify current pricing and terms with the vendor.
